Moving a car to MD involves a safety inspection. So I’m typing this in the waiting room of Rockville Automotive & Truck Service.
Update: more than an hour later, I’m presented with a bill for $70 for the inspection and a list of things that need fixing before the car can pass it. So I’ll be back tomorrow to get them fixed, and to get the paperwork to take to the MVA. Then back, or to another place, soon afterwards, with the other car.
Right now, this seems like a time-consuming and expensive hoop to jump through to move to MD. And it is certainly that. On the other hand, it is a safety inspection. But if it’s important for road safety, why is it just a one-off event?
I should make it clear that I’m not complaining about Rockville Automotive & Truck Service. Neither am I requesting that the inspection be an annual thing, as it is in Massachusetts. But the MA inspection is a lot less demanding in terms of time and of money.

Just relocated from California and there you only need a smog check @ $100.00. Maryland has a good Scam going for itself. All other States have a more leniant Vehicle Registering Process. I thought the law was repealed Oct. 2009? Oh well…
